In the grand metaphysical architecture of Sri Aurobindo's philosophy, the Supermind, or Truth-Consciousness (Vijnana), occupies a position that is not merely high in the hierarchy of being, but is functionally unique and indispensable.

Sage Kapila is the founder of the Sāmkhya system and his work Sāmkhyaśūtra is the first work of this school. The Sāmkhya is considered to be a very old system since its ideas pervade the Indian literature including the srutis, smritis and purāņas. This system is described as atheistic (niriśvara) as distinguished from yoga which is called the theistic (Śeśvara).

The Carvaka or Lokayata school represents one of the most radical and intellectually courageous movements in the history of Indian thought.
